Two Pharmacological Texts on Whey by Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Zakariyyāʾ al-Rāzī.Aileen Das & Pauline Koetschet - 2021 - Journal of the American Oriental Society 137 (1):25.
This article offers the first edition and translation of two heretofore unpublished pharmacological treatises by Abū Bakr al-Rāzī, namely Fī ittikhādh māʾ al-jubn and Fī manāfiʿ māʾ al-jubn, which seem to have formed part of a lost volume on dairy products. As it demonstrates, al-Rāzī’s examination of whey is connected to his philosophical interest in the complex nature of simple substances such as milk. The article also highlights how these two treatises built on the Greek pharmacological tradition by incorporating (...)

    Al-Rāzī by Peter Adamson.Thérèse-Anne Druart - 2022 - Journal of the History of Philosophy 60 (4):692-693.
As there are several famous al-Rāzī relevant to philosophy, I need first to specify that this remarkable book deals with Abū Bakr Muhammad ibn Zakariyyā' al-Rāzī, also known as "Galen of the Arabs," and in Latin as well as in the Canterbury Tales as "al-Rhazes." He proudly presented himself as both a philosopher and a physician taking Galen as his model. Just as in Hellenistic times Galen was highly valued as a physician but demeaned as a philosopher, so (...)

  14. Razian prophecy rationalized.Hüseyin Güngör - 2023 - British Journal for the History of Philosophy 32 (3):401-425.
Abū Bakr Muḥammad bin Zakariyya’ al-Rāzī (865–925) is generally known as a freethinker who argued against prophecy and revealed religion based on arguments from fairness of God and rationality. Recently some scholars argued that Razi was not as radical as the general interpretation takes him to be. Both the freethinker and conservative interpretations seem well supported based on difference bodies of evidence. However, the evidence is based on secondhand reports. In this paper I argue there is an (...)

This paper initiates a dialogue between classical Islamic philosophy and late modern European thought, by focusing on two peripheral, ‘heretical’ figures within these traditions: Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Zakariyāʾ al-Rāzī and Friedrich Nietzsche. What affiliates these thinkers across the cultural and historical chasm that separates them is their mutual fascination with, and profound indebtedness to, ancient Greek and Hellenistic philosophy. Given the specific themes, concerns and doctrines that they appropriate from this common source, I argue that al-Rāzī and Nietzsche (...)

Two New Texts on Medicine and Natural Philosophy by Abū Bakr al-Rāzī.Peter E. Portman & Emily Selove - 2021 - Journal of the American Oriental Society 137 (2).
This paper introduces two newly discovered epistles by the celebrated physician and philosopher Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Zakariyyāʾ al-Rāzī. The first epistle addresses the question of why and how clothing can be used both to stay warm and to stay cool, drawing on the Aristotelian tradition of problem literature. The second epistle arises out of a court polemic and treats the question of whether one should consume mulberries after watermelons. This study offers analysis, editions, and translations of these previously (...)

Abū Bakr al-Rāzī’s ethical decision-making systems.Muhammad Mahdi Montasseri - 2024 - British Journal for the History of Philosophy 32 (6):1254-1281.
Ethics plays an essential role in the philosophical framework of Abū Bakr al-Rāzī. Although most of his philosophical works have become extinct, two surviving works serve as primary sources for understanding his ethical theory. Although sharing certain foundational principles, these two works diverge in terms of ethical standards and exhibit distinct logical approaches to ethics, a facet that has largely remained unexplored within contemporary scholarly discourse. I aim to extract and reconstruct both of his ethical decision-making systems by shedding (...)

Al-Farabi's commentary and short treatise on Aristotle's De interpretatione. Fārābī, Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad Abū Naṣr al- Fārābī & Abū-Naṣr Muḥammad Ibn-Muḥammad al- Farābī - 1981 - London: Published for the British Academy by Oxford University Press. Edited by F. W. Zimmermann.
"Al-Farabi of Baghdad (c. 870-950) is the first major representative of the medieval Arabic Aristotelianism which came to influence the Christian West so profoundly. In the Islamic world his writings on logic set the pattern for the future and virtually created Islamic philosophy. He is also important as a witness to the study of Aristotle in late antiquity, demonstrating a knowledge of Galen and the exegetical tradition of Porphyry. This translation is based on a fresh study of the Arabic manuscripts. (...)

Retour Sur la Polémique Entre Abū Bakr Al-Rāzī Et Abū Al-Qāsim Al-Balḫī: Conjecture Sur Un Écho du Kitāb Al-Zumurrud d'Ibn Al-Rāwandī Dans Les Maṭālib Al-ʿāliya de Faḫr Al-Dīn Al-Rāzī.Marwan Rashed - 2024 - Arabic Sciences and Philosophy 34 (1):75-93.
This article revisits the controversy between Abū Bakr al-Rāzī and Abū al-Qāsim al-Balḫī. Based on the testimony of the Kitāb taṯbīt dalāʾil al-nubuwwa of the Qāḍī ʿAbd al-Ǧabbār, it is shown that the two philosophers must have clashed at the court of Aḥmad b. Sahl al-Marwazī, governor of Balḫ, during the 910s, and that the virulence of the tone of their exchange can be explained above all by this context of professional rivalry. In terms of content, their conversation must (...)

In these centers, noteworthy works of mathematics, astronomy, geography, medicine, pharmacology, optics, botany, chemistry and other fields of science, which would later determine improvement paths for these fields, were created. Abu al-Izz Ismail ibn al-Razzaz al-Jazari (12th-13th centuries), was a magnificent Muslim scientist known for his work named The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices (Kitab fi (...)
